Public Transport

Zones and Prices of a Ticket

The public transport system in Zürich works with different zones shown on the map. Zone 110 is the main zone in Zürich. Only in case of  arrival at Zurich Airport or a visit outside of this zone (for example to the hill Üetliberg) a ticket for multiple zones will need to be purchased. Tickets purchased for multiple zones will cost more than for a single zone.

Within zone 110, a 24-hour ticket costs 8,80 CHF. These 24-hour tickets are really recommended when commuting to multiple places in a day. Notice that a public transport ticket for zone 110 is valid for both busses, trams and local trains called S-Bahns.

Other tickets that can be purchased are single and short-distance tickets. A single ticket costs 4,40 CHF, and the price of a short-distance ticket will vary depending on the distance. This will be shown in the SBB Mobile app.

How to buy a ticket

To buy a ticket there are two options.

  1. (Nearly) all bus, tram and S-Bahn stops have a ticket vending machine where you can buy your ticket. Here it is possible to pay both cash and by card. You can buy single, short-distance or 24-hour tickets here.
  2. Download the SBB Mobile app and buy your ticket online. Here you can also buy single, short-distance or 24-hour tickets. For single journeys there is a very handy feature called “EasyRide”. When enabling access to your live location you can swipe right at the beginning and right at the end of your journey. The app will automatically calculate the distance and price of the ticket afterwards.
